and she opened eyes
filled with love and purest bliss
earth mirrored the glow
Devipaksha begins with homage to ancestors. Today is Mahalaya, the first day of Devipaksha, those of you who has been with me last year know the stories.
In most of the homes where the Goddess Durga is worshipped during the upcoming durgapuja today her eyes are drawn, that means today is the day she opens her eyes in earth, her father’s home.
We bengalis worship the mother goddess as a daughter who comes down to visit her home for five days, mahashashthi to Vijayadashami, on Vijayadashami she returns to her home, to Kailasa where she lives with her husband Shiv for the rest of the year.
On Mahalya every male hindu offers his homage to his ancestors, at-least most of them do. The banks of rivers, especially Ganges are totally thronged with priests and men.
The Goddess is still six days away but her eyes have opened and believe me we can feel it.
May all her blessings shower down on your world.
